If you’ve done any research on the root of aging, you’ve learned about the connection between telomere length, longevity, a lower risk of disease and health issues.
Commonly referred to as the "caps on our shoelaces" for our DNA or genes, telomeres protect these strands at the end of our DNA from shortening and fraying. It’s now believed these internal time-keepers (and their length) control how quickly we age or how early we see signs of aging.
Aging is a complex scientific process that we’re still learning more about every day, but the simplest way to explain the role of telomeres and aging is the older we get, the shorter our telomeres get. The reason why they get shorter as we age is that when our cells divide they cannot replicate and repair themselves as accurately as they did when we were younger.
One way to keep your telomeres long is with better lifestyle choices.

Life Choices = Longer Telomeres = Longer Lifespans

Recent studies show better lifestyle choices can affect the length of our telomeres. Healthy lifestyle choices include diet, exercise, mental health, and the reduction of stress.
For example, study after study has shown chronic stress is linked to shorter telomeres. What better way to reduce stress? Exercise! There are plenty of benefits to exercising, and now we are adding another one to the list. One study showed results indicating that telomere shortening in later years is reduced with high-intensity aerobic exercise. Another interesting study found in The Journals of Gerontology Series A: Biological Sciences and Medical Sciences showed that 100-year-olds in good health had “significantly longer” telomeres than adults with health problems.

Telomere Length is Scientifically Correlated to Lifespan

Research shows there is something else we can do about short telomeres. If your serious about lengthening your telomeres and want to take this to the next step beyond food, nutrition, and stress, read on.
By providing your cells with the nutrition that most directly impacts telomere length like botanical antioxidants, DNA-repair extracts, phytonutrients, nitric oxide enhancers, and methylating agents, you can help lengthen these telomeres that are correlated to life expectancy.
Feeding your cells with telomerase-supporting nutrients backed by science helps support healthy telomeres which allow for a higher number of accurate cell divisions, or clean copies, in the life of your cells, and can help result in naturally slower aging.

Telomerase is the anti-aging enzyme responsible for the length of telomeres

Are you concerned about short telomeres? Fortunately, there is a solution.
Telomeres can regain a portion of their lost length with the help of telomerase, an enzyme that rebuilds some of the telomere sections that are lost over time. Telomerase is usually plentiful in younger cells that have a long life ahead of them. It generally decreases or can disappear entirely in older adult cells.
Telomeres can be lengthened by activating the enzyme telomerase using natural ingredients that have the unique ability to extend your telomeres so you can switch off your internal time clock, and slow down and even reverse the destructive effects of aging.1

Telomeres are central to the aging process

By Dr. Fuhrman

Telomeres are the caps of DNA at the ends of our chromosomes that protect our genetic material and make it possible for our cells to divide. Telomeres are where the DNA replication machinery attaches during the cell division process, so that the entire DNA strand can be copied. Each time the cell divides, the telomeres get shorter. For the next cell division to happen, there must be enough room left on the telomere for the replication enzymes. If the telomere becomes too short, the DNA can’t be copied properly, and the cell cannot divide. To prevent excessive shortening, the enzyme telomerase rebuilds telomeres. Telomere length and telomerase activity are factors associated with biological aging. As scientists continue to examine the complex role of telomeres in the aging process and the role they play in our health, we have come to understand that shorter telomere length is associated with lifestyle-related diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, osteoporosis, and cancer, and premature death.

The good news is that telomere length, although influenced by genetics, can also be affected by environmental factors, including diet and lifestyle choices. A superior diet and a healthy lifestyle are associated with greater telomere length. Conversely, since oxidative stress and chronic inflammation are linked to telomere shortening, studies have reported factors that promote inflammation and oxidative stress may also accelerate telomere erosion, namely obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, chronic stress, and a low socioeconomic status.

What does this mean for you and me? It means that the positive choices we make when it comes to what we eat or how much we exercise—among other lifestyle factors—can maintain our telomeres, one of the many mechanisms by which healthy behaviors promote longevity. Higher levels of vegetable and fruit consumption, fiber intake, vitamin and mineral adequacy, and exercise are the factors associated with longer telomeres and/or greater telomerase enzyme activity.1-5

When the telomeres get too short, the cell can no longer divide, becoming what scientists call senescent. Senescent cells are still alive, but not able to carry out normal cellular processes, and as more cells in a tissue become senescent, it impairs the tissue’s ability to repair damage. Plus, senescent cells negatively affect the function of neighboring cells, including promoting the development of cancer.6

Telomere length and telomerase enzyme activity can be measured in human white blood cells. A shorter length or lower telomerase activity has been associated with not only the shortening of the human lifespan, but also a number of chronic, preventable diseases, including hypertension, cardiovascular disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, depression, osteoporosis, and obesity.1,2,7,8

In a study assessing the relationship of food groups to telomere length, vegetables were found to have the most significant association to greater telomere length. In particular, peppers, carrots, spinach, tomatoes, and root vegetables had the highest correlation. Further analysis showed specific micronutrients from whole plant foods were associated with telomere length. Also, in a study involving an elderly population, vegetable and fruit consumption were both significantly associated with longer length telomeres. Another study in women found dietary fiber consumption to be associated with longer telomeres, further supporting the idea that whole plant foods can improve telomere length.

In addition to a healthful diet, supplementing with a carefully-designed multivitamin can help to optimize the body’s supply of micronutrients, which may benefit telomere length by tempering oxidative stress and chronic inflammation. 2,3 The problem is that supplementing with some nutrients that are sub-optimal in one’s diet is beneficial, but other supplemental ingredients may have negative effects, such as folic acid. The reason I designed my own was to make it easy to supplement with added Vitamin D, B12, zinc and iodine, without ingesting folic acid, Vitamin A and beta carotene; ingredients that could be harmful. 9-12

A comprehensive lifestyle change study assessed the impact on telomeres and found improvements in diet, exercise, stress management, and social support significantly increased telomere length by approximately 10 percent. Notably, the more individuals changed their behaviors, the more dramatic their improvements became.

The aging process is complex, and much has yet to be determined, but these findings indicate that lifestyle factors can influence telomere length and cellular aging. A high-nutrient diet and a healthy lifestyle supports healthy aging, and may even help decelerate the aging process.

Foods That Lengthen Telomeres

By Al Sears MD

In 1984 Dr. Elizabeth Blackburn discovered what may be the single most important anti aging discovery.

The Telomerase Enzyme.

Dr. Blackburn was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine for this discovery.
I have personally known about the importance of Telomeres for years, but until recently the only known way to really boost the length of telomeres was an outrageously expensive supplement called T-65, that only the very rich could afford.
I am so excited to report that there are now scientifically proven simple ways that the average person can boost the length of their telomeres, which slows down the aging process.
I found out about these simple protocols through one of my trusted anti aging advisers,
Dr. Al Sears

Dr. Al Sears.

Dr. Sears is considered a pioneer in anti aging medicine. He operates a successful integrative medicine and anti-aging clinic in Florida with over 25,000 patients. He is famous for his cutting-edge therapies that solve some of the most difficult-to-diagnose cases.
Dr. Sears has written 14 books and over 100 reports on health and wellness. He is also the founder and director of the Wellness Research Foundation, a non-profit research organization.
Dr. Sears was the first doctor licensed to administer groundbreaking DNA therapy that activates the gene that regulates telomerase.
After reading his report on how to Activate the Enzyme that Rebuilds Your Telomeres, I realized that this is the reason my husband seems to be growing younger. You can read all about his journey back to health in Cathey’s Immune Boosting Tips.

You may be asking what are Telomeres and why should I care?

Telomeres
Deep inside every cell in your body is a strand of DNA with a “protective tip” similar to the protective tip of a shoelace. This “protective tip” called a telomere controls aging.
Everytime your cells divide, your telomeres get shorter, which causes you to age faster. Once you run out of telomeres, cell division stops and life comes to an end.
The goal then is to keep the telomeres as long as possible therefore slowing down the aging process so that you not only feel younger, you look younger and you may even live longer.

There are simple protocols that will activate, or turn on the Telomerase Enzyme that will “rebuild” your Telomeres.

As I mentioned earlier the supplement TA-65 is one way to “flip the switch” turning on the telomerase enzyme which will lengthen your telomeres. The cost is around $500 per month.

Resveratrol
Resveratrol

According to new studies this anti-aging nutrient “significantly increases telomerase activity” by “turning on” genes that promote longevity, and “turning off” genes that promote disease.
  • Resveratrol is found in
  • Red Wine
  • Purple Grape Juice
  • Mulberries
  • Raisins
  • Acai (I buy the organic freeze dried acai and put into my morning smoothies every day)
It is very hard to get enough Reserveratrol in your daily diet. (you would have to drink 1,000 glasses or more of red wine daily)
Dr. Sears recommends taking a Resveratrol supplement with around 10mg – 20 mg for optimal telomerase activation.

Green tea
Green Tea (EGCG)

In a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition, the telomeres of green tea drinkers were .46 kilobases longer. This is equal to about 5 years of life.
The EGCG in green tea can prevent and repair cell damage and fights the effects of pollution, sunlight and smoking.
Forget the bottled green tea drinks and go for the whole tea leaves sold in specialty tea stores.

N-Acetyl-Cystein (NAC)

NAC is a potent amino acid building block of the body’s master anti-oxidant called glutathione (GSH). NAC activates the telomerase gene, often called the “fountain of youth” gene.
Dr. Sears recommends a dose of 1,800mg – to 2,400 mg a day.
I personally take Pure Encapsulations NAC.
NutsAlpha Tocopherol
This is the most well-known from of vitamin e and will protect against telomere shortening.
Researchers from Finland believe that alpha tocopherol prevents cancer by neutralizing free radicals, protecting cells from oxidation and stopping damaged cells from multiplying.
The best way to get your Vitamin E is from food.
  • Nuts
  • Nut oils
  • Seeds
  • Apples
  • Beef
  • Seafood
  • Avocados
  • Spinach.

  • You can also take 400 IU of Vitamin E with mixed tocopherols.
  • I personally take Pure Encapsulations Ultra-Synergist E.

Carlson TocotrienolsGamma Tocotrienol

One of the four lesser known forms of vitamin E, Gama Tocotrienols can extend telomere length by 16%.
It is next to impossible to get enough tocotrienols from the few foods that contain them Dr. Sears recommends a supplement with at least 20 mg of “mixed tocotrienols”.
I recommend Carlson’s Tocotrienols.

grassfedbeefL-Carnosine

Used to repair tissues and clear away toxins and it helps preserve your telomeres.

Grass fed, pasture raised meat is the best way to get carnosine from food.
If you don’t eat meat, Dr. Sears recommends taking a supplement of L-Carnosine
500 milligrams twice a day instead of all at once.

L-Arginine

Increases telomerase activity by stimulating the production of nitric oxide (NO), the molecule that relaxes the blood vessels.
Body builders have been using l-arginine for years. Taken before a workout, it gives them a “muscle pump” by getting more blood and oxygen to their muscles.
Dr. Sears recommends 500mg – 1,000 mg per day.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C

There is now evidence that vitamin c not only prevents loss of telomeres, it also increases telomerase activity in specific stem cells.
Telomeres are very sensitive to oxidation and vitamin C prevents oxidation.
Food sources of vitamin C
  • Citrus fruits
  • Cantaloupe
  • Kiwi
  • Mango
  • Papaya
  • Pineapple
  • Berries
  • Watermelon
Dr. Sears recommends 540 mg per day. (I personally take 1500 mg per day)

sunbath for Vitamin D3

Vitamin D3

Crucial for boosting the immune system, Vitamin D also activates telomerase activity by as much as 19.2%.
One of the best ways to boost Vitamin D3 is to get in the sun at least 15 minutes 3 – 5 times per week.
You can also get Vitamin D from
  • Cod Liver Oil
  • Herring
  • Catfish
  • Salmon, cooked
  • Mackerel, cooked
  • Sardines, canned in oil, drained
  • Tuna, canned in oil

Milk Thislte

Milk Thistle (silymarin extract)

This ancient herb is known for it’s detoxifying benefits. Silymarin triples telomerase activity.
Dr. Sears recommends 200 mg in capsule form twice a day.

Ginkgo Bilboa

Ginko Biloba

Known as a brain booster because it helps open up blood vessels and enhance circulation and oxygen levels. Ginkgo Biloba extract also significantly increased telomerase activity.
Dr. Sears recommends taking 40mg -80mg for 4-6 weeks then stopping for 4-6 weeks, then starting up again. If you take Ginkgo Biloba continuously it loses it’s effectiveness.
Folic Acid
Stimulates the activation of telomerase.
  • Food sources include
  • Black eyed peas
  • Lentils
  • Spinach (raw)
  • Asparagus
  • Lettuce
  • Avocade
  • Broccoli
  • Tropical Fruits
  • Oranges
  • Wheat Bread

Acetyl L-Carnitine

This amino acid is a brain booster as well as an activator of the human telomerase gene.
  • Food sources include
  • Beef steak
  • Ground Beef
  • Pork
  • Bacon.

There you have it, some simple ways to boost your telomerase activity.

I don’t believe you need to run out and buy all the supplements. My advice is to be more conscious of the telomere boosting foods and include them more often in your diet.

Dr. Al Sears: Anti-aging Medical Breakthrough Can Extend People’s Lives By Decades

Dr. Al Sears: Medical breakthrough can extend people’s lives by decades
Dr. Al Sears has developed a powerful anti-aging supplement called Omega Rejuvenol. Based upon scientific discoveries that won the 2009 Nobel Prize for Medicine, it has the ability to give people extra decades of useful, enjoyable life.
Anti-aging pioneer Dr. Al Sears announcesd the release of a breakthrough treatment based upon a Nobel Prize-winning discovery with the power to extend life by decades.
Dr. Sears’ famous clients have included a number of A-list Hollywood celebrities, supermodels and professional athletes.

This is just one...
This innovation, called Primal Force: Omega Rejuvenol, contains a unique mixture of potent natural ingredients with the power to turn back the clock in your body – cell by cell.
People who use Omega Rejuvenol can expect smoother skin, better vision from healthier corneas, and more-flexible discomfort-free joints. The natural supplement can also give them more energy by powering up their heart and boosting lung capacity. And it can give them more confidence, too, by rejuvenating their brains so they can learn and remember as well as someone half their age.
Numerous scientific studies – conducted at the world-renowned universities Yale, Harvard and USC – have shown how each component of Omega Rejuvenol can help stop or slow the cell damage that leads to aging.
Omega Rejuvenol’s ingredients become even more effective together, helping those who take it live longer while keeping their bodies physically active and their minds mentally sharp.
“You may have to grow older but you don’t have to look or feel your age,” says Dr. Sears, founder of the Center for Health and Wellness. “This breakthrough treatment has already had an extraordinary effect on many of my patients.”
Omega Rejuvenol lowers LDL “bad” cholesterol, elevates HDL “good” cholesterol, supports healthy blood pressure, promotes healthy blood sugar, and maintains healthy triglyceride levels. So it can prevent, halt and even reverse many serious illnesses.
The secret of Omega Rejuvenol’s success goes back to 2009 when Elizabeth Blackburn, Carol Greider and Jack Szostak won the Nobel Prize for Medicine.
The trio of researchers had discovered “telomeres,” the “time clocks” that countdown how long each of our cells will live. The trio also discovered an enzyme called “telomerase,” which stimulates the growth of telomeres.
Telomeres are the endcaps of our chromosomes. They prevent our DNA from unraveling. But every time a cell replicates to replace itself, its telomeres become just a little shorter – like a degrading photocopy. When the telomeres become too short, the DNA unravels, the cell dies and the body becomes a little bit older.
Over the past six years, more than a 1,000 scientific studies have shown that we can control how fast or how slowly our telomeres degrade. We can even help them grow longer. We can do this by avoiding stress, environmental toxins and unhealthy foods. We can also preserve or enhance our telomeres by exercising, eating properly and taking the right supplements.
Every supplement in Omega Rejuvenol has been scientifically shown to either protect telomeres from shortening or to encourage them to grow longer.
“If you can lengthen your telomeres, your cells can keep dividing,” says Dr. Sears. “And you’ll look and feel younger, even decades younger.”
